Liuren and Taiyi: related arts with different structures

Qimen, Liuren and Taiyi are often grouped as the Three Styles because of their elaborate arrangements of temporal and spatial signs. That grouping does not make their procedures interchangeable. They share vocabulary involving calendrical signs, yin-yang and the Five Phases, yet develop distinct organizing structures and textual traditions. Modern rankings that place them on a ladder of predictive power claim more than the historical category itself establishes. Ask instead what information each method uses, what questions its texts address and how it connects structure with interpretation.

Great Liuren uses conditions including the day signs, time and monthly commander to organize heaven and earth plates, then constructs Four Lessons and Three Transmissions alongside further symbolic agents. These are specific relationships generated through rules; the numbers four and three alone do not explain the procedure. Liuren daquan collects materials whose introductory comments also reveal disagreements across transmission. The simpler method commonly called Small Liuren should not be treated as a proportionally reduced version of Great Liuren merely because the two names resemble one another.

Taiyi texts often organize accumulated years, palace positions, host-guest relations and symbolic commanders. Political order, warfare and ominous events figure prominently in historical material, although other uses also exist. It is therefore too restrictive to claim that Taiyi concerns only the state. The Golden Mirror Classic is an important entry point. Its Siku introduction describes a Tang compilation context while also noting later chronological additions and criticizing particular judgments. It offers evidence both for studying a technical tradition and for understanding how later readers evaluated that tradition.

Select one account of inputs, one structural diagram and one interpreted case from each work. Check whether their intermediate steps belong to the same edition and method. Religious associations of symbolic commanders and Taiyi deserve study, but a name alone does not establish a practitioner’s religious identity. Historical reasoning about political events or calamities also does not substitute for current verifiable information. Preserving the original question, date and editorial comments gives a fuller account of use and criticism than collecting only memorable stories described as successful.
