What Is BaZi (八字)? The Four Pillars of Destiny, Explained

BaZi (八字) means "eight characters". It is also called the Four Pillars of Destiny (四柱), and the two names describe the same object from different angles: four pillars, each made of two characters, eight characters in total. Those eight characters are a notation for the moment you were born — year, month, day and hour — written in a cyclical calendar that China has used for well over two thousand years.

Each pillar pairs one of ten Heavenly Stems (天干) with one of twelve Earthly Branches (地支). The stems and branches cycle against each other and repeat every sixty combinations, which is why the sixty-year cycle exists at all. Every stem and every branch carries one of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and a polarity, yin or yang. So your eight characters are also a distribution of five elements, and that distribution is what a practitioner actually reads.

Two of those eight characters do most of the work. The stem of the day pillar is your Day Master (日主) — the character that stands for you, and the reference point for everything else in the chart. The branch of the year pillar is your Chinese zodiac animal, the part almost everyone already knows. If you have only ever encountered "I am a Rabbit", you have met one of eight characters, which is roughly like knowing your sun sign and nothing else in a Western chart.

It is worth being precise about what BaZi is not. It is not the Chinese zodiac, though it contains it. It is not astronomical — no planets are involved, and the calendar is solar-term based rather than star-based. And it is not a single agreed doctrine: schools disagree about how to weight elements, whether a birth at 11pm belongs to the next day, and how much a hidden stem should count for.
