Year of the Dog (狗): Traits, Wealth Style and Compatibility

Dog years include 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018 and 2030. The Chinese year starts at the lunar new year, so births in January and early February may belong to the Rooster year before. Our calculation resolves the boundary with solar terms.

The Dog is the guardian of the cycle. In Chinese folklore it is the animal that stays at the gate, and the reading follows straightforwardly: an animal defined by what it protects rather than by what it wants, and one that is read as morally serious in a way most of the other eleven are not.

The Dog is traditionally read as loyal, fair-minded, alert to character and quick to defend. It is a good judge of people, it holds a line once it has decided where the line is, and it is trusted with things because it has never traded on that trust. The counterweight the classics name is anxiety: the same watchfulness that spots the problem early also spots problems that are not there.

On money, the Dog is read toward security and toward relationships. The traditional emphasis is on protection of what has been built, on long working partnerships, and on caution with anything that looks too easy. Practitioners often read the sign as slow to commit and durable once committed. Again: a characterisation of temperament as the tradition frames it, not a claim about anyone's finances.

The Dog's Ben Ming Nian last fell in 2018 and returns in 2030. In one's own animal year the tradition counsels modest commitments, and red worn close is the customary observance.

For pairings, the classical trine puts Dog with Tiger and Horse, and the six-harmony pairing puts it with the Rabbit. The direct opposition is the Dragon. In 2026, a Horse year, the Dog sits inside its own trine, which the tradition reads as one of the more supported positions on the circle.

Two details that recur in traditional writing. Each branch owns a two-hour block, and the Dog holds 7pm to 9pm — the hour the household settles and someone stays awake. And each sign carries occupational associations: for the Dog these run toward law, security, social work, teaching, activism and medicine — fields organised around protecting somebody, which is how the tradition reads this sign at every level.

Traditional attributions for the Dog: the fixed element is Earth, the colours are red, green and purple, the numbers are 3, 4 and 9, and the direction is west-northwest. Vocabulary, not instruction.
