Heaven withdrawing above the mountain: strategic distance taken in good order.
Heaven draws away from the encroaching mountain — retreat as strategy, not rout. This hexagram dignifies the well-timed step back: when conditions strengthen against you, distance preserves what confrontation would spend. Its counsel is orderly, even cheerful withdrawal — choose the moment, keep dignity intact, mark the line you will hold. In the old reading the superior person retreats not in hatred but in reserve, keeping strength for a better field.
