Hexagram Forty-Seven
困
Oppression
The lake drained dry: pressure that tests, and reveals, what a person is made of.
Water has sunk below the lake bed — a season of constraint in which resources and recognition both run short. The tradition ranks this among its most serious teachers, and its teaching is composure: in exhaustion, words are little believed, so let conduct speak instead. The counsel is to hold cheerfulness of spirit inside hard limits, spend only on essentials of body and character, and outlast. Pressure of this kind, met with quiet dignity, becomes the credential no easy season issues.
