Are yin-yang and the Five Elements Daoist?

Yin-yang, the Five Phases (五行, wuxing — "Five Elements" in most English usage), and qi are not Daoist inventions. They belong to what scholars call traditional Chinese cosmology: a shared, pan-Chinese framework that predates Daoism and Confucianism as distinct traditions and was used across medicine, statecraft, divination, agriculture and philosophy alike.

Komjathy puts it directly: "These concepts are not Daoist. They are part of what is best understood as traditional Chinese cosmology… correlative cosmology is not Daoist in origin or in essence." The same passage says the same of fengshui, and of the Yijing, which it calls "not a Daoist text" — older than both Rujia and Daojia, and later canonised as one of the Confucian Five Classics.

Here is where most summaries overshoot. The same source, in the same paragraph, says of these concepts: "Like other aspects of Chinese culture, they formed part of the foundational Daoist worldview." Daoists used them. Daoists studied the Yijing, especially in internal and external alchemy. Some Daoists practised fengshui throughout Chinese history.

So the accurate claim is narrow and specific: these concepts did not originate with Daoism, do not belong to it, and using them does not indicate Daoist affiliation or identity. The inaccurate claim — "yin-yang and the Five Phases are not Daoist", full stop — pushes a position about ownership into a position about association, and lands on a second error.

Why this matters for a site like this one: our own engine calculates with the Five Phases and our oracle uses the Yijing. Labelling either as "Daoist" would be the single most commonly listed mistake in the field, made on our own front page. It costs nothing to say "traditional Chinese cosmology" instead, and it is simply what the material is.
