Six-line divination: a figure becomes a relationship structure

Liuyao (liu-yao, 六爻) literally concerns six lines, but everyday usage often names a later technical tradition involving stem assignment. A consultation produces a figure and identifies changing lines; additional rules assign calendrical signs and relationships to its positions; interpretation then addresses a particular question. Producing a figure, completing its assignments and interpreting it are separate activities. Familiarity with the original Changes judgments does not by itself amount to knowledge of this later system and its accumulated technical vocabulary.

Host and response mark positions used to organize the relation between a subject and a counterpart. The categories called Six Relations include parents, siblings, descendants, wealth and official-ghost relations through Five Phase assignments. They do not name six literal family members, and the official-ghost label does not establish the presence of a spirit. Here yongshen generally identifies the principal focus selected for the question. Its meaning is not automatically identical to the same term in every Four Pillars text, so it must be defined again when crossing systems.

Changing lines, transformed lines, the day and the month contribute additional relationships. Terms for strength, combination, clash, emptiness and disruption describe conditions within this technical framework. An isolated sign should not be detached from the whole arrangement and made to settle an outcome. The same figure can be approached differently for different questions. Zengshan buyi organizes these issues through conceptual chapters and cases. Follow how the text weighs competing conditions rather than extracting a short judgment and applying it indiscriminately to unrelated situations.

Historical cases show how writers chose a focus and constructed an explanation. They may also have been selected, retold and edited. They are not automatically equivalent to modern controlled research. A study record should distinguish the original question, consultation conditions, assigned structure, interpretation and later report, without silently adding information from the reported outcome. A figure can prompt reflection on a situation, but symbolic relationships do not establish facts about another person’s intentions, bodily condition or safety. Those questions require independent attention to actual evidence and circumstances.
