Plum Blossom Numerology: numbers, images and ti-yong

Plum Blossom Numerology, Meihua yishu (Mei-hua i-shu, 梅花易數), organizes numbers, figures and everyday observations into a consultation method. Received manuals describe approaches using times, quantities and things seen or heard. This explains how a tradition selects interpretive material; it does not establish that every incidental sound carries a fixed external message. The method shares figures with six-line stem-assignment traditions but does not therefore share all their assignment rules. Identifying the selected method makes the later technical vocabulary much easier to follow.

Ti and yong distinguish a principal subject from associated conditions. Traditional readings then use phase relationships and the condition of the figures to interpret that relation. These are not measured physical entities, nor are they automatically equivalent to every philosophical use of the same pair of words. Received texts also discuss interlocking figures, changed figures, internal and external conditions, and movement and stillness. Ask why each additional layer enters a reading instead of allowing one generating or restraining relationship to determine the entire interpretation.

The tradition is frequently connected with the Song thinker Shao Yong, and the plum-observation story forms part of its cultural transmission. Yet received books contain prefaces, editorial layers and additions from different periods. An association with Shao Yong does not establish that every surviving paragraph or case is his own writing. His thought about images and numbers, later narratives about him, and the compilation history of the received manual should be studied separately. Careful attribution describes what the evidence supports rather than removing the cultural importance of the association.

One scene can be counted in several ways, and one image can be associated with several things. This gives the method substantial contextual flexibility. In retrospect, a memorable story can draw attention mainly to details that fit its outcome. A useful notebook therefore records the observation, selected rule and initial interpretation before later developments, retaining outcomes that differ. Imagery can assist writing or reflective questions, but its expressive force does not establish a causal link with external events or provide a basis for judging an unfamiliar person’s character.
