How the Tradition Reads Wealth in a Chart (财星)

The wealth element is the one your Day Master controls. That single rule is where every colour, material and direction recommendation comes from.

In BaZi, the ten relationships a chart can have to its Day Master are called the Ten Gods (十神), and one of those relationships is wealth. The rule that produces it is mechanical and short: your wealth element is the element that your Day Master controls. Wood controls Earth, so Earth is wealth for a Wood Day Master. Fire controls Metal, so Metal is wealth for a Fire Day Master. Earth controls Water, Metal controls Wood, Water controls Fire. Five Day Master elements, five wealth elements, no interpretation required to get that far.

The image behind the rule is worth having. In the classical framing, wealth is not something that flows to you — it is something you exert effort upon. What the Day Master controls is what it can work, shape and put to use. That framing is why practitioners read a chart with plenty of the wealth element as one with a great deal to work on rather than as an inherently prosperous one, and why they read the relationship between the wealth element and the Day Master's own strength as the more interesting question.

The tradition splits wealth into two kinds, and this is the distinction most useful to a modern reader. Direct Wealth (正财) is the wealth element of the opposite polarity to the Day Master: steady, earned, recurring — salary, rent, a business with a predictable shape. Indirect Wealth (偏财) is the wealth element of the same polarity: irregular, entrepreneurial, opportunistic — a venture, a windfall, a side project that outgrew itself. Neither is better. Charts weighted toward one and charts weighted toward the other are read as suited to different kinds of work.

The other half of the reading is capacity. The classics are consistent that a chart needs enough of its own energy to make use of the wealth element it has, and the phrase practitioners use is that a Day Master must be able to carry its wealth. A supported Day Master with wealth present is read one way; a Day Master needing support with a great deal of wealth in the chart is read as needing allies and resources before anything else. This is where the strength judgement and the wealth reading meet, and it is the substance of most of what a wealth-focused reading actually says.

That is also where the colour and material vocabulary comes from. When any Chinese metaphysics site tells you to wear green or face east or keep something yellow nearby, it is almost always working from the wealth element or the favourable element of your chart. The chain is: birth data → Day Master → wealth element → the traditional colour, direction and material for that element. Nothing in that chain is mysterious, and it is entirely traceable, which is why we show each step rather than only the last one.

A closing note on what this is and is not. This is a description of how a tradition reads a chart. It is not financial advice, it is not a forecast, and no outcome follows from it. Our free reading calculates your Day Master and your element balance, names the wealth element that follows from them, and describes the temperament the tradition associates with the combination. What you do with that is entirely yours.
