The Pig closes the cycle, and in the race story it arrives last because it stopped to eat and then to sleep. Chinese tradition does not read that as a failing. The pig is a household emblem of plenty and of a settled life, and the animal's position at the end of the twelve is read as completion rather than defeat.

The Pig is traditionally read as generous, sincere, sociable and comfortable with enjoyment in a way the more austere signs are not.
